The Rock House Story

Rock House is believed to have been built in the 1820s, originally as a beer house known as 'The Colonel '. In later years, it became accommodation for the Irish Navy, who came to Sussex to build the railways. Take a short stroll, and you will come across the now disused lines and tunnels.

1920, George Arther Kemp purchased the property along with extra land and turned it into a market garden growing soft fruits, transporting the fruit to Covent Garden.

By 1980, the premises, then known as Rock House, were in a state of disrepair. A builder, John Ballieux, then purchased the property and land. He had a huge passion to restore the historic house, bringing it back to life, continuing the legacy of hard work and hospitality.

Rock House was then opened to guests as a charming holiday retreat. Today, the tradition of welcome and hospitality endures at Rock House and has evolved into this unique Glamping destination.
